Biliary atresia is a rare yet severe condition, requiring timely intervention to prevent hepatocellular damage. Universal screening of infants for biliary atresia can help, but the cost-effectiveness of existing screening methods is not known in countries with high-disease prevalence rates. Now, a new study by researchers from Japan reveals that universal screening with stool color card and direct bilirubin test can be cost-effective in Japan, depending on the thresholds of willingness to pay for health benefits.
