Fruit fly dorsal fan-shaped body (IMAGE)
Caption
The dorsal fan-shaped body pictured is a structure in the brains of fruit flies that controls their sleep behavior. Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the University of Missouri, Kansas City, have found that brain neurons in the dorsal fan-shaped body adapt to help the flies stay awake despite tiredness in dangerous situations and help them fall asleep after an intense day.
