How to monitor water for HIV drugs (IMAGE) University of Johannesburg Caption Everywhere people live, medicines end up in wastewater. Also, one person’s wastewater is often mixed into another person’s drinking water. But most countries have almost no regulations restricting the levels of drugs in wastewater – or in drinking water. UJ researchers developed a method to detect two HIV drugs used in South Africa in wastewater and river water. It is so simple and cost-effective, laboratories can regularly monitor for antiretrovirals. The method also works for potable water from water treatment plants.
