Die dichten Schwammgründe, die auf dem nördlichen Langseth-Rücken entdeckt wurden, stellen ein erstaunlich reichhaltiges Ökosystem dar. Es zeigt, dass Schwämme und die mit ihnen verbundenen Mikroorganismen eine Vielzahl widerstandsfähiger Nahrungsquellen nutzen, darunter auch Überreste aus fossilen Tiefseequellen.
