Circulating antibody (white) is prevented from accessing olfactory epithelium by a previously unknown blood-olfactory barrier, the BOB. This newly identified barrier keeps some of the larger molecules of the body’s immune system out of olfactory epithelium (green), leaving a gap in protection may explain two mysteries of COVID.
