Luminescent nanothermometers have a size that is much smaller than bacteria and human cells, making the measurement of temperatures in such small organisms possible. On the other hand, classical thermometers are much larger and cannot monitor the temperature in biological microenvironments with sufficient spatial resolution and without heavily disturbing the probed species.
