Bonds (IMAGE)
Caption
Catch bonds (red) are weak in low-tension areas (1) and therefore rapidly unbind (2). These unbound ones rebind at random places in the network, but only bind tightly in high-tension areas (3), thereby reinforcing the network where it’s most needed. In contrast, normal bonds (blue) remain stuck in low-tension areas.
