In this micrograph, a human macrophage (a type of immune cell) is shown after reduction of the gene DNMT3A. The large green structure is the cell’s nucleus; red indicates the presence of cytoplasmic protein. The small green dots represent mitochondrial DNA that has escaped from the nucleus into the cytoplasm, inducing an inflammatory response.
