lithium tracking results (IMAGE)
Caption
These images show irregularities in how lithium behaved during one cycle of battery charge and discharge using a copper (Cu) substrate for the battery anode. Mapping data were collected at half charge, full charge, half discharge, and full discharge. Top row: state of charge (SOC) on the cathode; middle: amount of lithium on the anode; bottom: amount of lithium on the anode relative to the average for the cell as a whole. The images reveal that lithium deposition during charging was mostly uniform, but lithium removal during discharge resulted in areas of irregularity. In areas labeled 3 and 4, lithium removal lagged, but eventually finished up by the time the battery was fully discharged. In areas labeled 1 and 2, lithium removal lagged so much that most of the deposited lithium remained on the anode even after full discharge.
