An ageing rate of zero means that the risk of dying does not increase with age (Aldabra giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea). A rate lower that zero means that the risk of dying decreases with age (black marsh turtle (Siebenrockiella crassicollis). A rate higher that zero means that the risk of dying increases with age (Egyptian tortoise (Testudo kleinmanni) and humans).
