Qian Shi, PhD, conducted experiments at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio to learn how cells called microglia are impacted by administration of the drug rapamycin. Rapamycin treatment in an Alzheimer's disease mouse model was associated with increased beta-amyloid plaques in the mice, Dr. Shi and his colleagues found. Changes in the microglia contributed to this, they noted.
