Graeme Milton, University of Utah (IMAGE) University of Utah Caption Graeme Milton, a distinguished professor of mathematics at the University of Utah, is the senior author of two newly published studies outlining the numerical and theoretical basis for a new method of cloaking objects from various kinds of waves. Milton does not expect the new method will lead to the kind if invisibility cloaking seen in science fiction films, books, games and TV shows. But he does believe it has long-term potential for practical uses in shielding submarines and planes from sonar and radar, respectively, protecting buildings from earthquake seismic waves and preventing tsunamis from destroying oil rigs and certain coastal structures.
