Rice University chemical and biomolecular engineers led the discovery of a new biocatalyst, CtdE, used in this illustration to construct an alkaloid with a critical 3S-spirooxindole framework, as seen in blue in the bottom molecule. Their study also provides deeper insight into the mechanism of stereoselective catalysis. FAD (flavin adenine dinucleotide) and NADH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) are cofactors used in the reaction.
