3-D Rotating Image of Cathode Material (VIDEO) DOE/Brookhaven National Laboratory This video is under embargo. Please login to access this video. Caption This video shows a 3-D elemental association maps of a micron-scale spherical component of a new battery cathode material. These images, generated using transmission x-ray tomography, reveal higher levels of manganese and cobalt (darker blue, red, and purple) on the exterior of the sphere and higher levels of nickel-containing materials (green, light blue, yellow and white) on the interior. The manganese forms an effective barrier, like paint on a wall, protecting the inner structure of the nickel-rich reactive material.
