Bands Indicate Topological Nature of Materials

Researchers have discovered how to identify new examples of topological materials, which have unique and desirable electronic properties. The technique involves finding the connection between band theory, which describes the energy levels of electrons in a solid, with a material's topological nature. In the image, the lack of connection between the two bands indicates the material is a topological insulator.
