Salmonella Injectisome (IMAGE)
Caption
On the left is an electron microscope image of an injectisome, the nanoscopic needle that salmonella and certain other bacteria use to inject proteins into target cells as part of the infection process. The illustration at center depicts the exterior of the needle and its base. The cross-section at right shows the string-like molecular ruler that determines the length of salmonella's bacteria needle, according to a new University of Utah study by doctoral student Daniel Wee and biology professor Kelly Hughes.
