Phage Nucleus (VIDEO) University of California - San Diego This video is under embargo. Please login to access this video. Caption The video shows previously unseen processes of giant phage while reproducing inside a bacterial cell. Phage replication begins when a virus particle attaches to the surface of the cell and injects its DNA. A protein shell assembles around replicating phage DNA, establishing the phage nucleus, which is positioned at the center of the cell by filaments. Later, capsids travel along these 'treadmill' filaments to dock on the phage nucleus and initiate viral DNA packaging. Credit Video created by Janet Iwasa.
