Larva (above and middle) and pupa (below) of the cotton leafworm Spodoptera littoralis; both have been infected with pathogenic Enterococcus faecalis bacteria. Enterococcus mundtii symbionts in the gut of healthy caterpillars kill these pathogens and inhibit infection.
