Scientists from Australia and the US have discovered and identified the genetic cause of a previously unknown human autoinflammatory disease. The autoinflammatory disease, called CRIA syndrome, is caused by a mutation in a critical molecule in the cell death pathway, which leads to runaway inflammation and cell death. The discovery suggests that compounds that inhibit cell death might be useful in treating autoinflammatory diseases. The research was published in Nature, and led by the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Australia, and the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), US.
