Picture of immature oocytes compared to mature oocytes (IMAGE)
Caption
Examples of the human oocyte stages used in this study. On the left is an immature GV-stage oocyte recognizable by a visible cell nucleus (white arrow) called germinal vesicle (GV). On the right is an in vitro matured metaphase II (IVM-MII) oocyte, which is the equivalent of mature eggs in vivo and which can be recognized by the polar body, a by-product of oocyte maturation (black arrow). The majority of changes related to age were observed at this stage of oocytes.
