The black tube that Dana is holding is one of the photodetectors the group is assembling and testing in Delaware for the new VERITAS telescope cameras. The team is making 2,000 of them and will be installing them on the four telescopes in Arizona next summer. You can think of each one of the photodetectors as a pixel in a 500-pixel camera, which is used to take pictures of the very brief flashes of blue light, which result when gamma rays hit the Earth's atmosphere.
