type A GABA (IMAGE) UT Southwestern Medical Center Caption A three-dimensional structure of the type A GABA receptor bound with GABA and propofol embedded in a cell membrane. Propofol is the most commonly used intravenous anesthetic and acts through the receptor. The receptor is colored in green, blue, and yellow for distinction of different subunits. The bound propofol in the transmembrane domain is colored in salmon at the subunit interface. The phospholipids that make up the cell membrane are colored gray with their phosphate head group colored in red and orange.
