Single Neuron in a Living Brain (IMAGE)

This image shows a patch-clamp pipette contacting a single neuron in the brain of a mouse. Scientists from the Technische Universitaet Muenchen have discovered that individual neurons carry out significant aspects of sensory processing. Using a method that gives them single-synapse resolution, Prof. Arthur Konnerth and colleagues focused on neurons involved in processing movement-related signals and found that an individual neuron integrates inputs from many synapses into a single output -- a decision, in essence, made by a single nerve cell.
