In 2016, Penn Medicine patient Kiran Shelat (right) took part in a clinical trial in which he received a kidney from a deceased donor who had been infected with the hepatitis C virus. Called THINKER, the next phase of this trial will aim to provide a comprehensive view of the risks and benefits of the practice. It will be led by nephrologist Peter Reese, MD, a professor of Medicine and Epidemiology (left).
