Researchers compared the DNA sequence of mitochondrial genomes from muscle cells, brain cells, and single female reproductive cells--oocytes (left) using an extremely accurate DNA sequencing technology called duplex sequencing (center) and found that mutations accumulated during the lifetime of the older mice (right).
