Stagnant Health Technology: Safe, Portable Medical Waste Incinerator Developed in Ghana

Invented by Moses Musaazi of Makerere University, Uganda, this easy‑to‑use, inexpensive, WHO‑approved portable medical‑waste incinerator could help solve the problem of hospital waste management in rural areas, especially during mass polio immunization and similar programs. The incinerator requires no fuel other than the medical waste and achieves temperatures of 800 degrees C. It is one of 25 technologies MRC researchers discovered stagnating in health research institutions in Africa ‑‑ products with the potential to improve local health but which exist only in a lab due to a failure of commercialization or support.
