Representative fluorescent image of a stochastic Turing pattern of signalling molecules in a biofilm of forward-engineered E. coli cells. The field of view is about 300 microns across. Right: Computer simulation of a stochastic Turing pattern with parameters corresponding to the experimental conditions. The simulation region is smaller than that of the experiment, but the statistical properties of the patterns are in agreement with those of the experiment.
