NMR 2 (IMAGE) Rice University Caption Rice University researchers used large-scale simulations to eliminate the role of paramagnetism in NMR characterization of oil and shale deposits in nanoporous shale formations. Under strong confinement, they found the volume fraction of heptane in a model polymer is low, as though the light hydrocarbon is being dissolved in the confining matrix. The figure shows measurements (open circles) and simulation results (filled circles) of the T1/T2 ratio for surface relaxation for one applied magnetic-field strength.
