Evolutionary Origin of Horns and Wings (IMAGE) Indiana University Caption This image illustrates the evolutionary origin of horns and wings from arthropods to insects. The second and third thoracic sections (in green) evolved into the fore and hind wings of modern insects, respectively. The first thoracic segment, however, facilitated the evolution of diverse innovations, such as horns in the scarab beetles (in blue) family, which include dung beetles.
