Image depicts the structure of a nanohoop of carbon and hydrogen, along with sidechains of sulfonate, developed by researchers at the University of Oregon. The sidechains promoted solubility in aqueous media so that the nanohoops, based solely on their sizes, would emit different colors in living biological cells.
