AmTrac (IMAGE) Carnegie Institution for Science Caption Wolf Frommer, director of Carnegie's Plant Biology Department, and his team developed a simple method for monitoring uptake of ammonium into live cells. This involved the creation of AmTrac, shown here as a three-dimensional model, an ammonium transporter coupled to a fluorescent protein, which allows the researchers to monitor the activity of the transport protein as it works to move ammonium into the cell.
