Leonard, Graphical Abstract (IMAGE) Northwestern University Caption This cartoon illustrates how Northwestern University's MESA (Modular Extracellular Sensor Architecture) technology may be used to rewire cellular input-output functions. In a new study, human immune cells were engineered to express MESA biosensors that recognize a tumor-derived protein, such that when these cells sense that native, tumor-derived cue, the cells produced an immune-stimulating factor (a programmed response that is useful but not found in nature).
