Macrophages Proliferation in the Lungs (IMAGE) McGill University Health Centre Caption Influenza infections are characterized by massive influx of monocytes/macrophages in the lungs. Although it is required to eliminate the virus, excessive inflammation contributes to the severity of the disease. In this picture, they identified a fraction of inflammatory monocytes/macrophages (in green) that proliferates in the lungs (proliferation marker in red) in absence of LTB4 signaling, contributing to the inflammation. Nuclei are stained in blue.
