Investigating the friction behavior of nanosystems, scientists from the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM) have discovered a previously unknown type of friction, the so-called desorption stick. They attached a polymer chain to the tip of an AFM and measured the resulting forces while dragging the polymer chain over different surfaces.
