The Big Red Plasma Ball is pictured in Sterling Hall at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Oct. 2, 2017. The Big Red Plasma Ball, part of the new Wisconsin Plasma Physics Laboratory (WiPPL) being led by Physics Professor Cary Forest, is one of several pieces of scientific equipment being used to study the fundamental properties of plasma in order to better understand the universe, where the hot gas is abundant.
