Wind energy is surging worldwide, but can its growth be sustained? (a) Global installed wind capacity shows a sharp rise in the last decade. (b) U.S. installed wind capacity projected to 2021 (pink - average rated capacity, green - rotor diameter, black - turbine hub height, orange - electricity generated, blue - total installed capacity). Supercomputer simulations and analysis helped develop scenarios that show quadrupled expansion in U.S. by 2030 make small impact on efficiency and local climate.
