Sandra Rieger, Ph.D., of the MDI Biological Laboratory studies chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in zebrafish. She has received a five-year grant totaling $1.8 million from the National Cancer Institute to fund her research. She has identified two compounds with the potential to prevent or partially reverse chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in zebrafish. The grant will also fund studies in breast cancer patients at the Mayo Clinic. The goal is to identify therapies to treat chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in humans.
