A red coral shrimp walks across Orbicella franksi coral and past five slit-shaped apertures created by burrowing Lithotrya dorsalis barnacles in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary. Rice University researchers dove to the reefs and used historical photos to quantify how barnacles infest stony coral over a variety of conditions and reduce calcium carbonate on reefs.
