Graphene's Functionalization Reaction

The sodium-potassium alloy (NaK) in solution forms a sodium ion (Na?) when it meets the crown ether molecule (15-crown-5). Na? reduces graphene and makes it more reactive towards other molecules (R). The "decorated" graphene has several potential applications.
