Aballay Worm (IMAGE) Duke University Caption Duke researchers have shown that infection with pathogenic bacteria causes neurodegeneration in the worm C. elegans. Infected animals displayed neural changes that are hallmarks of neurodegeneration in patients with illnesses like Alzheimer's disease. The green region in this worm is a wavy, branched and beaded neuron, indicating neurodegeneration.
