Choanoflagellates are aquatic microbial eukaryotes that are distinguished by an apical flagellum (green), which is used for swimming and feeding, surrounded by a collar of microvilli or tentacles (red) against which bacterial prey are trapped. The nucleus is highlighted in blue.
