By continuously firing pulsed laser light at the plant as it rotates, then measuring how long it takes the light to return, the technique can gather millions of 3-D coordinates in a matter of minutes. A sophisticated algorithm then clusters and digitally molds those coordinates into distinct components of the plant while measuring traits such as leaf area and leaf angle.
