In the laboratory setting, scientists used tiny enclosed treadmills with simulated lighting, which the sea turtle hatchlings followed while on the treadmill. The study objectives were to characterize the energetics of extended crawl distances on the hatchlings and determine whether crawl distances impacted their ability to swim.
