Mitochondrial Autophagy (IMAGE) UT Southwestern Medical Center Caption This Electron microscopy images show a damaged mitochondrion (M) being captured by a forming autophagosome (P). In this process, the protein LC3 (shown in black dots) interacts with the protein PHB2 at areas of mitochondrial membrane rupture. This process, called mitophagy, is important for removing damaged mitochondria and keeping cells healthy, the UTSW study showed.
