Researchers in Sweden recently demonstrated a novel concept for laser-beam-based communication links using a near 'noiseless' optical pre-amplifier in the receiver. They demonstrated an unprecedented receiver sensitivity of only one photon-per-information bit at a bit rate of 10.5 Gbit/s. This approach will provide a path for increasing the reach and information rates in future high-speed links for inter-satellite communication, deep-space missions, and Earth monitoring with Lidar.
