Two Sublayers of Area CA1 in an Awake Mouse (IMAGE)
Caption
Microscopic image of cells in the CA1 region of the hippocampus, divided into two sublayers. Cells in the superficial layer are stained red, while cells in the deep sublayer are stained in cyan (greenish-blue).
In new research performed in mice, researchers in the laboratory of Attila Losonczy have defined the precise role that these two sublayers play in guiding the mouse to where it wants to go -- thus shedding light on a key feature of the brain's internal GPS.
