Since atrial fibrillation (AF) strongly increases the risk of stroke, it is important to detect AF as early as possible, in order to start preventive therapy. However, about one-third of AF is asymptomatic, and it is sometimes difficult to detect AF in a case with paroxysmal AF. We screened circulating microRNAs in peripheral blood, and found 4 microRNAs associated with the presence of AF. The diagnostic panel utilizing these 4 microRNAs might be useful to predict an asymptomatic and/or undiagnosed AF with a blood test.
