The Flame Refluxer prototype is tested in the burn pan at the Joint Maritime Test Facility in Mobile, Ala., part of tests conducted between March 13-17, 2007. Developed by fire protection engineering researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), the device designed to burn off oil spills more completely. It transmits heat from an oil fire into the oil to superheat it and make the fire hotter, more productive, and cleaner. The device consists of copper coils attached to a "blanket" made from copper wool sandwiched between layers of copper mesh.
