Research by Douglas Williamson, Ph.D., from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and his collaborators discuss factors that can cause stress-related disorders in teenagers. In addition to inherited traits and environmental factors, the scientists proved that genetic changes over time to the serotonin transporter -- a gene that regulates the amount of serotonin signaling between brain cells and is frequently the target for antidepressants -- may also be a factor.
