GE Axichrom Column (IMAGE) Texas A&M University Caption GE Axichrom column packed with beads that have nickel on them, resulting in the slight green color. The pink color is from the culture media being loaded on the column to bind the spike protein that was made in culture media. After all of the culture media is washed away, a solution containing a chemical that forces the spike protein off the nickel column is used to obtained the spike protein in purified form.
